Motor vehicles will remain the largest filter market in China through 2014, when sales will reach 24.6 billion yuan due to the high volume of air intake, oil and fuel filters sold. Currently, internal combustion engine filters account for the majority of Chinese filter demand and will post the strongest gains at 14% annually through 2014, driven by growth in the production and stock of motor vehicles and other transportation equipment, Freedonia says.

Reflecting the sudden demand for services such as Cheng’s, two years ago the American market research firm Freedonia Group forecast that China’s demand for air filters would grow 13.5% every year to 66.2 billion yuan ($10.8 billion) by 2014. About 3 million air cleaners were sold last year, up some 50 percent over 2011, which beat the previous year by 20%, the state-run China Daily newspaper says, citing the China Household Electrical Appliances Association. Major brands such as Panasonic and Philips PHG -1.42% are jousting their way onto department store shelves with local appliance makers such as Midea and Yadu.
