Study #: 3799 | Published: 02/2020 | Pages: 225 | Individual User License: US$ 5,600

Through 2024, demand for countertops in the US is forecast to rise 2.8% per year to 932 million square feet valued at $42.1 billion. Going forward, market advances will be bolstered by:

  • increasing residential kitchen and bathroom remodeling, as well as consumer willingness to trade up to more expensive materials such as granite and engineered stone to improve home values
  • trends favoring larger kitchens and multiple bathrooms in single-family homes
  • rising housing completions and commercial building construction

Key Findings in the Countertops Study:

Despite Heavy Tariffs, Engineered Stone Is Expected to Be Fastest Growing Material

Through 2024, engineered stone is projected to be the fastest growing major countertop surface material. Engineered stone countertops have made rapid inroads in the market since 2014, as the availability of low-cost materials in popular colors has increased at a robust pace. However, an even faster rate of growth will be prevented by trade tensions and steep tariffs on quartz slab imports from China and India, as other low-cost sources of quartz slab have been unable to meet surging US demand for these products.

Residential Kitchen & Bath Remodeling Continues to Drive US Countertop Market

The US countertop market is dominated by kitchen and bathroom remodeling applications. Market growth will be supported by the fact that countertop replacement remains the most popular home remodeling project. Additionally, rising consumer interest in engineered stone, porcelain slab, and butcher-block countertops will drive demand for countertops as homeowners look to trade up from laminates and solid surface to more natural looking and aesthetically pleasing surface materials. The shift away from laminates and solid surface to engineered stone, granite, and niche materials will also support robust value demand growth through 2024.

Laminates Expected to Lose Significant Market Share Through 2024

Despite being the dominant countertop surface material in the US for decades, laminates are expected to continue to lose market share as other more aesthetically pleasing materials – such as granite and engineered stone – become more popular.

However, use of laminates will remain widespread – particularly among budget-conscious consumers – due to their relatively low price points and minimal maintenance requirements. In order to stay relevant, laminate countertop manufacturers have:

  • expanded and diversified their offerings of specialty and decorative laminates
  • moved into other countertop materials, such as engineered stone
