Demand for drain, waste, and vent pipe is forecast to climb 2.1% per year through 2024 to $1.4 billion. Plastic pipe will continue to capture market share from more traditional metal pipe materials, especially in small and medium diameters. An increase in prices for those plastic pipe types will also boost market value.

COVID-19 Pandemic to Slow Growth in DWV Pipe

The coronavirus pandemic is expected to have a particularly severe impact on the building construction industry, the primary driver of demand for drain, waste, and vent pipe. Construction projects were considered “essential” businesses in many cases during the March to May 2020 shutdowns.

However, consumers’ and businesses’ ability to finance new housing and commercial projects is expected to be limited for at least 2020, and perhaps longer. Nonresidential building construction, for example, is not expected to return to 2019 levels by 2024.

Nevertheless, home renovation activity may support DWV pipe sales to a degree, as many consumers have increased spending on home improvement projects as a response to pandemic-related restrictions.

PVC Continues to Gain Share over Other Materials

PVC will remain the predominant material utilized in drain, waste, and vent applications. Increases will be stimulated by the material’s favorable properties, including:

  • extremely low cost per linear foot relative to copper and ductile iron
  • ease of handling and installation
  • corrosion resistance

Ductile Iron & Copper Remain Crucial in Niche Applications

Although PVC remains the material of choice for installers of drain, waste, and vent pipe, ductile iron and copper will continue to play a role in pipe installations that require such performance characteristics as:

  • greater structural strength (ductile iron)
  • sound-deadening, which is key in multifamily housing (ductile iron)
  • fire resistance (both copper and ductile iron)
  • maintaining continuity with existing pipelines within older buildings (both copper and ductile iron)
