US demand for ice cream and frozen dessert packaging is forecast to rise 3.1% per year to $948 million in 2024. Advances will be driven by:
Additionally, near-term sales will be boosted by increased indulgence purchases amid the COVID-19 pandemic and a related bump in retail ice cream and frozen dessert sales.
Demand for ice cream and frozen dessert packaging rose quickly in 2020, up over 5% from 2019 due to surging retail ice cream sales amid the COVID-19 pandemic – though demand growth is expected to decelerate as the pandemic recedes. A rise in at-home eating, combined with expanded indulgence purchases, supported increased demand for frozen desserts in smaller sized, individually portioned containers – such as ice cups, bars, and edible cookie dough bites.
Tubs and cups will remain the leading packaging for ice cream and frozen desserts, supported by the entrenched position of these products for popular items such as ice cream pints and quarts as well as for single-serving frozen desserts.
The fastest growth among packaging types is projected for pouches, largely the result of growth in demand for novelties, where pillow pouches are used with treats such as hand-held bars, popsicles, and ice cream sandwiches. Stand-up pouches are also seeing more extensive use in frozen dessert packaging, such as for edible cookie dough bites.
Sustainability initiatives by leading packaging suppliers and frozen food brands are leading to more intensive use of higher value packaging products that are biodegradable, lighter weight, or recyclable. For ice cream and frozen dessert brands – particularly in premium applications – reducing use of plastic is a growing area of focus. In order to do so, companies are looking to improve the sustainability of the traditional paperboard tubs and cups. In 2019 and 2020, for instance, premium frozen dessert brands Oatly and Coconut Bliss replaced their pint paperboard containers – which were coated with polyethylene – with paperboard tubs that are lined with a sugarcane-based bioresin.
