Through 2024, demand for flexible frozen food packaging is forecast to rise 3.6% per year to $3.2 billion. Advances will be supported by:
Additionally, 2020 sales will be bolstered by a spike in at-home frozen food purchases during the COVID-19 pandemic due to surging grocery sales amid reduced foodservice activity and increased consumer stockpiling of nonperishable foods.
Though bags will remain the most used type of flexible frozen food packaging due to their low cost and broad range of applications, pouches will post the faster gains as they continue to capture market share from bags and rigid containers. Stand-up pouches offer enhanced performance and visual appeal and are increasingly preferred in applications such as frozen entrées and meat, poultry, and seafood products due to their enhanced billboard space and visibility in store freezers.
The meat, poultry, and seafood segment will remain the leading and fastest growing market for flexible frozen food packaging, bolstered by rising use of higher value products such as stand-up pouches and vacuum skin packaging in premium applications.
Healthy increases are also expected in applications such as frozen fruits, vegetables, and juices; frozen specialty foods; and frozen ice cream novelties – due in part to increasing adoption of higher value pouch packaging. For instance, in ready-to-heat frozen specialties and frozen vegetable applications, steamable stand-up pouches employing value-added venting technologies are increasingly used due to their enhanced convenience.
Ongoing efforts by manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprints through source reduction will continue to drive the development of more sustainable packaging technologies, such as products based on recycled or degradable materials. Suppliers of bags, pouches, and plastic film used with frozen food packaging are increasingly investing in recycled, recyclable, and/or biodegradable materials (e.g., post-consumer recycled plastic, bioplastics) that help these companies – as well as their customers – meet sustainability goals.
