Demand for TPEs used in medical products is forecast to rise 5.3% per year to 190,000 metric tons in 2024, continuing the strong growth of the 2014-2019 period. Although many TPE markets are expected to decline in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical market is expected to fare relatively well, with some demand growth arising from increasing healthcare utilization worldwide. Still, the market in 2020 will be restrained to an extent by the cancellation or postponement of some “nonessential” healthcare visits.
Over the long term, the medical market’s strength derives from a shift away from use of PVC and other products that contain plasticizers in manufacture of medical products. This shift will be most noticeable in developed markets, where a material’s health impacts are often a key consideration when designing and purchasing supplies. In addition, the faster processing speeds of TPEs compared to thermoset rubber makes TPEs attractive for many manufacturers.
As a result, TPEs – namely SBCs, TPUs, TPOs, and TPVs – are making significant market inroads in applications such as IV bags and tubing.
Unlike for most TPE end-uses, North America has historically been the largest market for medical TPEs – with a 39% market share in 2019 – due largely to the mature and technologically advanced medical device industry in the US, as well as the country’s healthcare spending per capita, which is the highest globally.
While North America is expected to remain a significant market through 2024, the Asia/Pacific region is quickly gaining market share in medical TPEs and, by 2024, it will nearly be on par with North America. Strong growth in medical TPE demand in the Asia/Pacific is driven by:
While SBCs will remain the most used due to their high level of chemical resistance and flexibility, TPUs and TPOs will post faster gains through 2024. In medical applications, TPUs are mostly used in hoses and tubing due to the fact that thermoplastic polyurethanes:
TPOs offer durability, low thermal expansion, and UV resistance, making them good choices for products requiring sterilization.
