Demand for lawn and garden fertilizers is expected to rise 1.0% per year to $3.4 billion in 2024:
With an increasing number of households participating in some form of lawn and garden activity, convenient, easy-to-use fertilizer formulations will remain popular. These products often come in improved packaging and tend to be more expensive, which will promote value gains. The best growth opportunities are expected for products targeted to specific applications – e.g., vegetable cultivation – or that emphasize convenience.
With consumers spending more time at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a larger percentage of households is reducing or eliminating use of landscaping and lawn care services and instead focusing attention on improving outdoor living spaces. This will expand opportunities for fertilizers used on ornamental plants, particularly potted plants and houseplants that are placed in outdoor spaces.
Even though the surge in pandemic-related gardening activity is expected to moderate in 2022 and 2023 as some households – particularly new entrants – move away from their gardening hobbies, demand is expected to remain elevated. Opportunities exist for companies to retain new market participants by providing educational materials and clear advertising about their products, as those hobbyists who see satisfying results are more likely to continue participating in the market in the long term.
Continued concerns about the environmental impact of fertilizers – including damage to aquatic ecosystems and water quality due to nutrient runoff – will continue to limit volume growth for fertilizers.
However, the introduction of an expanding array of fertilizer formulations that allow for lower application rates or fewer applications will support demand in value terms, as these more expensive formulations achieve effectiveness while addressing environmental concerns. Additionally, organic fertilizers – often perceived to be less hazardous to the environment – will continue to gain share of fertilizer demand, further aiding value demand.
