US demand for pavers is expected to increase 2.6% per year through 2025 to $1.7 billion, with most gains stemming from price increases:
Demand for pavers will be supported by strong consumer interest in outdoor living and hardscaping. This will continue to benefit installation of paved patios and walkways, primarily in residences, but also in nonresidential buildings such as offices, buildings, restaurants, and parks.
The COVID-19 pandemic had a positive effect on the paver market in 2020, as home renovation spending surged. While DIY activity has remained elevated throughout the pandemic, financial uncertainty, health concerns, and other factors prevented demand for larger scale professional projects to be fulfilled early in the pandemic. As economic conditions improved, demand for these higher value projects soared, but labor shortages, long wait times, and supply chain slowdowns caused some projects to be deferred further. As these restraints continue to become less of a factor, more delayed projects will be completed, boosting demand growth through 2021.
Already a growing trend pre-pandemic, interest in outdoor living and hardscaping increased significantly in 2020 as homeowners sought to improve the functionality of their outdoor spaces in order to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing area to socialize and entertain. The rising popularity of outdoor living will continue to spur a variety of home renovation projects, many of which will involve the use of pavers. Design trends promoting use of higher value hardscaping products – such as colored/textured concrete pavers and porcelain pavers – will bolster sales.
Compared to other hardscaping products, the commercial market for pavers grew at a faster rate than the residential market in 2020 due to the importance of patios for outdoor dining and socialization, which surged in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and, in many cases, became a necessity for businesses such as restaurants and bars to operate profitably. As the ongoing rebound in commercial construction activity accelerates in 2022 and 2023, more business owners and property management are expected to install patios to provide customers with space to dine or socialize outdoors, boosting growth in the commercial paver market through 2025.
