Demand for vacuum skin packaging (VSP) film used in food applications is forecast to increase 7.9% annually from $80 million in 2019 to $117 million in 2024. Sales will be driven by:
Beef, pork, and other meat products will continue to account for the largest share of vacuum skin food packaging demand, supported by VSP’s ability to accommodate different shapes, including those with high protrusions and sharp edges; improve product taste; and extend product lifespans. In meat applications, VSP is seeing the greatest expansion in the more expensive meat segments – such as steaks, bison, and lamb chops – as VSP helps impart a premium image and differentiate these products from lower end meat varieties.
Survey data indicate that consumers are most concerned with the primary function of packaging – protecting the product and maintaining food freshness and safety. Food safety is especially important for meat, poultry, and seafood products, as these items are associated with bacteria (e.g., salmonella, E. coli) that result in food poisoning. Priorities given to food quality and safety offer growth opportunities for VSP, which provides superior durability and leak resistance as well as helps to maximize shelf life.
Demand for VSP during, and in the immediate aftermath of, the COVID-19 pandemic will be supported by the essential nature of food products. Use of VSP in meal kits – which are seeing a resurgence in popularity as consumers seek to avoid trips to the supermarket – will also help support sales. Nonetheless, demand will remain primarily relegated to premium meat and other high-end products.
