Demand for vacuum skin packaging (VSP) film used in food applications is forecast to increase 7.9% annually from $80 million in 2019 to $117 million in 2024. Sales will be driven by:

  • expanding use of VSP with premium and organic foods (e.g., specialty meats and cheeses), where the costs associated with switching to VSP for processors are not as high as for large-scale producers
  • increasing familiarity with the many performance advantages of VSP
  • efforts to utilize more sustainable packaging materials, as VSP yields less solid waste than other types of packaging (e.g., EPS foam and rigid plastic trays), and generates less food waste by extending product shelf life
  • rising demand for ready-to-cook meals and meal kits, as VSP is useful for packaging foods with multiple components

Meat Applications to Remain the Leading Outlet for Vacuum Skin Packaging

Beef, pork, and other meat products will continue to account for the largest share of vacuum skin food packaging demand, supported by VSP’s ability to accommodate different shapes, including those with high protrusions and sharp edges; improve product taste; and extend product lifespans. In meat applications, VSP is seeing the greatest expansion in the more expensive meat segments – such as steaks, bison, and lamb chops – as VSP helps impart a premium image and differentiate these products from lower end meat varieties.

Food Freshness & Safety Are Priorities for Consumers

Survey data indicate that consumers are most concerned with the primary function of packaging – protecting the product and maintaining food freshness and safety. Food safety is especially important for meat, poultry, and seafood products, as these items are associated with bacteria (e.g., salmonella, E. coli) that result in food poisoning. Priorities given to food quality and safety offer growth opportunities for VSP, which provides superior durability and leak resistance as well as helps to maximize shelf life.

VSP Sales to Be Supported by the Pandemic-Related Shift to Home Cooking

Demand for VSP during, and in the immediate aftermath of, the COVID-19 pandemic will be supported by the essential nature of food products. Use of VSP in meal kits – which are seeing a resurgence in popularity as consumers seek to avoid trips to the supermarket – will also help support sales. Nonetheless, demand will remain primarily relegated to premium meat and other high-end products.
