Study #: 3620 | Published: 02/2018 | Pages: 91 | Individual User License: US$ 2,200

This study analyzes US demand for clothes washer and dryers. Only residential washers and dryers are included here; commercial units are excluded.

It presents historical demand data (2007, 2012, and 2017) and forecasts (2022) by product type (washer and dryer). Demand is presented in units. The study also evaluates company market share and provides analysis of leading manufacturers, including Electrolux, Haier, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, and Whirlpool.

Demand for clothes washers is forecast to increase through 2022 to 10.1 million units. Strong sales in recent years will limit potential unit replacement going forward, as many consumers upgraded their appliances between 2013 and 2017. Additionally, relatively weak unit sales between 2007 and 2012 will have a downward impact on washer sales through 2022. Units sold between 2007 and 2012 will generally be nearing the end of their operational lifespan by 2022, and as fewer units were sold in these years there will be less potential replacement sales.

Nevertheless, technological developments and new product innovations will continue to entice consumers to upgrade their current washers and dryers, especially as clothes washers become incorporated into larger smart home platforms.

Similar to washers, clothes dryers recorded rapid demand increases during the 2012-2017 period as sales picked up along with the economic recovery. However, this pace of growth was also partly the result of a cyclical low in 2012, as a number of consumers upgraded their clothes dryers while replacing clothes washers to obtain the available tax credit for energy efficient washers in 2009 and 2010. While dryers were not part of the tax credit, a number of consumers used the added savings from the tax credit for washers to upgrade their dryer as well. This early upgrading resulted in fewer units needing replaced in 2012, causing sales drop. Still, following the downturn in 2011 and 2012, sales accelerated each year through 2017.

Demand for clothes dryers is projected to expand through 2022 to 9.9 million units. This will represent a more moderate pace compared to the swings in sales recorded in recent years as new construction activity stabilizes and replacement cycles stabilize.
