USFloors Acquisition Highlights Rising Demand for WPC Flooring

The October 2016 announcement that Shaw Industries would acquire USFloors, the leading US supplier of wood-plastic composite (WPC) flooring, demonstrates the strong growth in demand WPC flooring has seen since its introduction to the US market. WPC flooring is similar to luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring but has a WPC core that imparts improved durability and a more comfortable floor surface for walking. Backed by Shaw’s extensive distribution network, it is expected that USFloors will expand WPC flooring production to meet the strong demand for this flooring material.

Homeowner Preference for Hard Surface Flooring Spurs Gains

Demand for hard surface flooring in the US is forecast to rise 6.1 percent per year to 11.3 billion square feet. Gains in housing completions will spur demand in the new housing segment, while homeowner efforts to improve the aesthetics of their houses will support replacement and remodeling demand. Increasing numbers of homeowners will install hard surface flooring in rooms -- such as living and dining areas -- where carpeting has previously predominated. Hardwood flooring, LVT, and porcelain tile will see increasing use because of their long lifespans and attractive appearance.

Strong Growth in Office, Retail, and Lodging Construction Activity Also Boosts Demand

In the nonresidential market, solid growth in office, retail, and lodging construction expenditures will boost demand for hard surface flooring. Increasing construction of structures such as shopping malls and office buildings will drive demand, as hard surface flooring is often used in these facilities because of its durability and slip resistance. In the institutional segment, hard surface flooring demand will rise as owners and managers of healthcare and educational facilities install these products because of their low maintenance requirements and their ability to improve indoor air quality.

Popularity of LVT Will Drive Advances for Vinyl Flooring

Among all hard surface flooring types, vinyl flooring is expected to post the most rapid gains in demand, driven by the increasing use of LVT. Homeowners, builders, and other consumers will increasingly install LVT because of its glossy surface and its ability to mimic more expensive materials, such as hardwood flooring and decorative tile. Hardwood and decorative tile flooring demand will also rise at a strong pace going forward. Hardwood flooring demand will be boosted by its aesthetic qualities, while decorative tile demand will be supported by tile’s moderate cost and long lifespan.
