US Demand for Construction Aggregates to Reach 3.0 Billion Metric Tons in 2027

Cleveland, OH, December 22, 2023 — Construction aggregates demand in the US is forecast to climb 1.6% yearly in volume terms through 2027, according to Construction Aggregates: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Suppliers will benefit from growth in real (inflation-adjusted) nonbuilding and commercial building construction; anticipated declines in real residential building construction will prevent faster advances.

Demand for crushed stone – the leading product segment – is forecast to rise 1.6% annually to 2027. Growth will be supported by 1.2% annual gains in real construction expenditures. Real expenditures on transportation infrastructure construction are expected to grow 3.2% annually to 2027 – road transportation uses high volumes of crushed stone – supported by the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in November 2021, which included $110 billion in funding for roads, bridges, and other major surface transportation projects.

These and other key insights are featured in Construction Aggregates: United States. This report forecasts annually to 2027 US construction aggregates demand in metric tons, segmented by product in terms of:

  • crushed stone
  • sand and gravel
  • alternative aggregates such as clay, shale, and crushed concrete

Total demand is also segmented by market as follows:

  • nonbuilding construction
  • residential construction
  • nonresidential construction

To illustrate historical trends, total demand and the various segments are provided in annual series from 2012 to 2022.

The types of aggregates covered in this report include:

  • hard, inert granular materials that are mixed with cementing materials to form concrete, mortar, plaster, or grout
  • minerals mixed with bitumen to form asphaltic concrete
  • aggregates used as road bases and coverings
  • aggregates employed in various other construction-related applications, such as foundation fill, railroad ballast, pipe bedding, drainage and erosion control, embankments and earth dams, landscaping, roadway snow and ice control, and roofing granules

Aggregates materials excluded from the scope of this report are:

  • minerals used in the manufacture of cement (such as clinker)
  • aggregates used in industrial applications (such as silica sand, fracking sand, and gravel used in sand production)
  • industrial grades of sand used in non-construction-related applications such as glassmaking (silica sand), foundry molds, and abrasives
