Global Cement demand is projected to expand 2.4% per year to 4.8 billion metric tons in 2026.
Cleveland OH, October 10, 2023 – According to the study by The Freedonia Group, Global Cement, demand for cement worldwide is projected to expand 2.4% per year to 4.8 billion metric tons in 2026. The type of cement used can vary significantly from country to country due to geographic and cultural factors, including preferred housing type (wood-based versus concrete-based) and availability of raw materials.
A broad range of cement products is available, reflecting the large range of applications for cement in construction and industrial products. In this study, these products are classified in three categories: straight portland cement, blended cement, and specialty cement.
Portland cement accounted for 78% of all cement sales in South Korea, where the product’s durability is valued, in 2021.
In contrast, blended cement accounted for 92% of demand in China because the country has a significant supply of materials needed to make these products. Cost concerns also drive the demand for blended cement.
In other countries, such as Iran and Russia, neither portland nor blended cement is significantly preferred over the other, so they account for more similar shares of demand.
Blended cement is the most frequently used product overall, capturing 73% of worldwide cement demand in 2021. However, this is primarily attributable to its dominance in the large Chinese market and its better environmental profile (due in part to its energy efficiency). Because of the weak outlook for cement in China, global demand for blended cement is expected to grow at a somewhat slower rate than portland and specialty cements through 2026.
Specialty cements – such as environmentally friendly cement and masonry cement – account for a small share of overall global demand (just 3% of world demand in 2021), but these products have grown at an above average rate and will continue to do so as more environmentally friendly construction products gain share across the world.
