Demand for membranes in the water treatment market is forecast to advance 5.8% per year to $8.3 billion in 2023. Growth will be driven in part by the implementation of more stringent quality regulations for water streams in both developed and developing markets. Gains will also be spurred by the extension of water treatment operations into areas without access to clean water. The increased use of high-value treatment operations such as membranes is aided by the fact that many of these areas are burdened with limited fresh water supplies or poor quality water. Global demand for membranes in all markets (water treatment, wastewater treatment, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical, medical and other markets) is expected to rise 6.5% per year to $31.7 billion in 2023. Rising demand for membranes in a variety of markets will be driven in part by increasingly strict environmental regulations, particularly regarding water treatment and wastewater streams.

- the requirements of fast-growing high-tech industries, including chemicals, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and electronics, which use fine separation technologies to achieve the requisite level of purity for input and waste streams
- ongoing development of new and better performing membranes and related systems for existing markets
