Freedonia Market Research Press Releases US Demand for Printing Machinery & Equipment to Total $2.2 Billion in 2021

US Demand for Printing Machinery & Equipment to Total $2.2 Billion in 2021

by Corinne Gangloff

December 7, 2017

Cleveland, OH, December 7, 2017 — US demand for printing machinery and equipment is forecast to total $2.2 billion in 2021, according to Printing Machinery & Equipment: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Ongoing competition from electronic media will continue to restrain demand for printed materials such as newspapers and books, limiting purchases of related machinery and equipment.

Demand for offset lithographic printing presses, once the largest segment, is expected to decrease 3.3% per year as printing and publishing shipments continue to fall. Competition from digital and flexographic presses, which offer increased flexibility to printers, will further drive declines.

Digital printing press demand is forecast to advance 1.3% per year, the fastest growth of any segment. Printing companies will continue to invest in digital presses in order to expand their service offerings, such as on-demand printing, mass customization, and flexible package printing. In particular, label converters are expected to increase investment in digital presses to capitalize on trends favoring shorter print runs and expanded customization.

These and other key insights are featured in Printing Machinery & Equipment: United States.

This report forecasts US printing machinery and equipment demand and shipments in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level to 2021. Total demand is segmented by product in terms of:

  • digital printing presses
  • offset lithographic printing presses
  • other printing presses such as flexographic, gravure, and screen
  • binding machinery and equipment
  • other machinery and equipment such as prepress preparatory equipment, separately sold parts, and typesetting machinery

To illustrate historical trends, total demand, total shipments, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2006 to 2016.
