US Office Furniture Demand to Increase 1.9% Annually in Nominal Terms to 2022

by Corinne Gangloff

November 28, 2018

Cleveland, OH, November 28, 2018 — US demand for office furniture is forecast to increase 1.9% annually in nominal terms through 2022, according to Office Furniture: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Continued gains in employment will drive sales as offices purchase more furniture to accommodate an expanding workforce. Suppliers will also benefit from strong advances in office and commercial building construction, as furniture will be needed to outfit these new workspaces. A forecast increase in office improvement activity will further support gains as companies remodel workspaces to include modern design features, such as collaborative work areas. However, the market for used furniture will continue to appeal to budget-conscious office purchasers, restraining further gains.

Demand for office seating is expected to expand 2.3% per annum through 2022, remaining the largest segment. Rising sales of more expensive products, such as those offering improved ergonomic features, will support demand.

These and other key insights are featured in Office Furniture: United States. This report forecasts to 2022 US office furniture demand and shipments in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level. Total demand and shipments are segmented by product in terms of:

  • seating
  • storage and tables
  • desks
  • other office furniture, such as bookcases, credenzas, modular workstations, and overhead bins for office systems

To illustrate historical trends, total demand, total shipments, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2007 to 2017.

Sales of used, recycled, and refurbished furniture are excluded from the scope of this report. Custom architectural and woodwork are also excluded, as are partitions, shelving, showcases, and stands. Establishments exclusively manufacturing furniture parts are excluded. Re-exports are excluded from demand and trade figures.
