“Packaging” refers to any containers, wraps, or accessories contained in or attached to containers or wraps that are used to ship meat, poultry, or seafood products to retail or foodservice locations. Packaging used for imported foods that are packaged outside of the US is excluded from the scope.
This study includes only packaging for animal-based products that are intended for human consumption, and excludes meat-alternative foods (e.g., plant-based hamburger patties). Packaging applications include:
- meat – including beef and veal, pork, and lamb and other meats (e.g., bison, goat)
- poultry – chicken, turkey, and other products such as goose and duck
- seafood – all fish and shellfish
Meat, poultry, and seafood packaging is segmented by market in terms of:
- fresh and frozen – raw, unseasoned, and unprepared/uncooked products that are unfrozen, and items that are sold frozen, but are not precooked, breaded, or reformed (e.g., whole or portioned beef cuts, chicken pieces, seafood fillets, uncured pork, raw sausages, ground beef)
- processed – prepared raw, refrigerated, and shelf-stable products, including prepared cook-in-bag foods (e.g., breaded and stuffed products, canned tuna and salmon, chunked chicken and ham, frozen chicken wings, hot dogs, jerky, lunch meat, pre-cooked bacon, pre-marinated ribs and chicken, precooked hamburger patties)
- ready-to-eat – carry-out foods prepared by foodservice operations of supermarkets, convenience stores, mass retailers, and other stores (e.g., barbecued ribs, cooked meatloaf, parmesan-crusted tilapia, roasted beef, rotisserie chicken); excludes precooked foods from product manufacturers, which are included in the processed market
This study also presents historical and forecast data for packaging technologies, including:
- active and intelligent packaging
- case-ready packaging
- modified atmosphere packaging
