Freedonia Market Research Blog GlassLab

GlassLab

Featured Ed Tech Startup

In a financial sense, GlassLab is not a traditional startup. It’s a non-profit that is transforming learning and assessment practices through digital games and technology. In 2012, the year GlassLab launched, it received $10 million in funding from Electronic Arts, the Entertainment Software Association, and the MacArthur and Gates foundations. In June 2014, the company was chosen to join Pearson’s ed tech accelerator program Catalyst, where startups are chosen based on their ability to address a set of learning challenges that Pearson releases every March.

In September 2014, GlassLab launched Playfully.org, a games platform that includes free games, student management tools, real-time reports and professional development materials.

GlassLab executive director Jessica Lindl said the platform can extend the impact of digital games in education by capturing data from game play to help educators better understand the learning the student experiences in the moment.

Playfully.org can capture data and provide reports on GlassLab games or third-party games. It also can integrate with a district’s student information system or learning management system.

Games can provide a more engaging learning experience on complex topics and simulate more real-world experiences, Lindl said. She believes the mindset around gaming in education is changing, in part because not just students are game-players, but more teachers now also are gamers.

GlassLab has two pricing models. The first option is the basic plan that allows unlimited access to games on all devices for up to 100 students for free. The second option is the premium plan which has different levels of pricing depending on the device and class size. For the basic premium plan for Chrome and web it starts at $25 per year and offers 365-day access to free games that are specifically tailored to the class size and device environment.
