Freedonia Market Research Blog Gutter Guard Sales Trending Upwards

Gutter Guard Sales Trending Upwards

by Bethan Davis

February 12, 2024

By blocking leaves, twigs, and other debris, gutter guards prevent clogs, which can lead to water damage to the roof, walls, and foundation of a building.

The demand for gutter guards is expected to show steady growth, with a projected increase of 3.0% annually in value terms to reach $1.1 billion by 2027, while demand in linear feet is forecasted to rise by 1.3% annually to 360.1 million. This growth is attributed to the rising adoption of gutter guards, particularly in the residential sector. The expansion of the market is subject to variations in state regulations regarding rain harvesting. Residential markets dominate demand, accounting for 87% of the market share in value terms in 2022, with gutter guards positioned as enhancements to traditional gutter systems. While some DIY products exist, most gutter guards are installed by specialized contractors, builders, and roofing contractors, limiting demand in commercial markets where alternative rain removal systems are prevalent.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Gutter Guards

Pros:

  • Maintenance: Gutter guards can significantly reduce the frequency of gutter cleaning by minimizing the amount of debris entering the gutters, thus reducing the need for manual cleaning.

  • Clogs: By blocking leaves, twigs, and other debris, gutter guards prevent clogs, which can lead to water damage to the roof, walls, and foundation of a building.

  • Lifespan: Since gutter guards prevent clogs and reduce the accumulation of debris, they can help extend the lifespan of gutters by preventing corrosion and rust caused by trapped water and debris.

  • Pest Infestation: Blocked gutters can provide a breeding ground for pests such as mosquitoes, rodents, and birds. Gutter guards can help prevent such infestations by keeping the gutters clean and free of debris.

Cons:

  • Cost: Gutter guards can be expensive to purchase and install, especially if you opt for high-quality systems or professional installation.

  • Effectiveness: Not all gutter guards are equally effective at keeping debris out of gutters. Some designs may still allow small particles to enter the gutter system, potentially leading to clogs and other issues.

  • Installation Challenges: Installing gutter guards can be challenging, especially for complex roof designs or gutters that are already damaged or poorly installed. Improper installation can reduce the effectiveness of the gutter guards and may even cause damage to the gutters or roof.

  • Risk of Water Overflow: In heavy rain or snowfall, gutter guards may not be able to handle the volume of water effectively, leading to overflow or water damage. It's essential to choose gutter guards that can accommodate the typical weather conditions in your area.

One of the most relevant benefits of gutter guards is the extended life span of gutters. In 2022, individuals aged 65 and older made up more that seventeen percent of the United States population. This group of consumers are unlikely to have the physical ability to maintain gutters and many live on limited income. Additionally, more people are remaining in their homes as opposed to purchasing new homes, requiring them to maintain those properties. Gutter guards can reduce the need for costly future repairs or replacements; thus, they are an appealing option to consumers.
