Key Findings in the Solar Roofing Study:

Favorable Tax and Other Incentive Programs to Support Installations

Demand for solar roofing will be supported by government efforts. The federal government’s 30% Investment Tax Credit and various rebates offered by state and local governments can significantly reduce the cost of buying and installing solar roofing, making it an economically viable choice for many consumers. Furthermore, incentive programs – such as net metering or net billing – that allow consumers to sell the electricity generated by their solar roofing back to a utility will also promote installations. In parts of the US that receive a lot of sunlight, consumers can often generate as much electricity as they use, greatly lowering their electric bills.

Solar Roofing Seen as Attractive Alternative to Roof-Mount Solar Panels

Solar roofing demand will also be promoted by consumer interest in these products as a more attractive alternative to roof-mount solar panels. Solar roofing is attached directly to a roof deck, creating a seamless integration with the rest of a structure. In contrast, a roof-mount solar panel rests upon racks or stanchions, which some homeowners feel detracts from the value and look of their residence. Many solar roofing products look like asphalt shingles or roofing tiles, thus making it appear that the roof is fitted with a traditional roofing product.

Falling Photovoltaic Module Prices to Make Solar Roofing a More Economic Choice for Consumers

The price of photovoltaic (PV) modules – which convert solar radiation into electricity – have fallen dramatically over the past decade as low-cost imports have taken market share from domestic suppliers. PV module prices are expected to continue to drop going forward as imports increase and manufacturers improve PV module efficiency. This combination of lower prices and increases in power output will make solar roofing more affordable over the long term, encouraging an increasing number of consumers to install solar roofing on their homes and businesses.
