Wood Preservative Market in the US

US demand to rise 4.5% annually through 2018

Demand for wood protection coatings and preservatives is expected to advance 4.5 percent per year through 2018 to $4.8 billion. Growth in the industry will primarily be driven by a rebound in residential construction activity, which in turn benefits the major applications in which wood coatings and preservatives are used -- namely furniture, decking, and siding. Further advances will be restrained by the rising use of non-wood materials in several key applications. For instance, coatings and preservatives will be limited in siding, where wood is forecast to account for a shrinking share of demand and faces fierce competition from alternative materials. In decking applications, although wood still dominates, plastic composite decking continues to erode wood’s share, which also reduces wood protection product sales.

Dominant coatings segment to lead gains

Demand for wood coatings is projected to rise at nearly double the annual rate of wood preservatives through 2018. Maintenance end uses account for a slightly higher share of coatings demand, driven by the needs of the large existing base of wood items. Even so, demand for new coatings in construction-related applications will be the primary impetus for accelerating demand gains through 2018. The industry will continue to see a shift toward factory-applied coatings over those applied on site in some applications (e.g., flooring and siding) due to their more uniform finish, greater durability, and ability to protect the item during transportation and installation. The adoption of higher priced products (e.g., powder, radiation-cured, and combined paint and primer or stain and sealer types) will boost value gains. Conversely, these products require fewer coats initially, provide greater durability, and need fewer coats over time, which will limit volume demand.

Demand for wood preservatives is expected to be supported by the rising production of pressure-treated lumber as construction activity rebounds. Faster advances will be restrained by the maturity of a number of applications, such as railroad products and utility poles. Copper azole has become the most prevalent preservative following the voluntary removal of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) from residential end uses in 2004. The use of copper azole has had a negative impact on volume demand, since the newer formulations require fewer pounds to treat the same amount of wood. This shift has had a lesser impact on value demand, since copper azole costs more than CCA. The rising popularity of higher value products that are newer to the market, such as nonmetallic imidacloprid-based preservatives, has also worked to restrain volume demand while boosting value demand.

Study coverage

This study analyzes the $3.9 billion US wood protection coatings and preservatives industry. It presents historical demand data for 2003, 2008 and 2013, and forecasts for 2018 and 2023 by coating (e.g., stains, paints, sealers, primers), preservative (e.g., copper azole, alkaline copper quarternary, chromate copper arsenate, creosote, pentachlorophenol), application (e.g., furniture, decking, siding, fencing, windows and doors, cabinets, flooring) and market (residential construction, nonresidential construction, nonbuilding construction, manufacturer-applied).

The study also considers market environment factors, details industry structure, evaluates company market share and profiles 28 industry players, including Sherwin-Williams, PPG Industries and Rockwood Holdings.
