Publishers Incorporate AI into Product Portfolios through Acquisitions, New Products, and Pilot Programs
Rockville MD, February 29, 2024 – Scientific and technical publishers are moving quickly to exploit opportunities to improve their products and services with artificial intelligence-powered features and benefits.
Market leader Elsevier unveiled Scopus AI in January 2024. The new product offers expanded and enhanced summaries, improved ability to identify foundational research, and more efficient identification of leading experts.
In November 2023, Elsevier launched Elsevier Datasets, developed to address the growing range of research customers who want to explore generative AI and predictive modeling in their businesses but lack high-quality datasets.
Major scientific and technical publisher Springer acquired the Science division of the AI-focused venture studio, Slimmer AI, as well as several companies that have AI-powered writing tools, including Research Square and TooWrite. In October 2023, Springer launched AI-powered writing assistant, Curie. Curie and other AI-powered scientific writing tools are expected to be especially important for assisting writers for whom English is not their native language and will help publishers attract important research from a wider array of countries.
Those are just a few of the findings outlined by Simba Information in its just published Global Scientific & Technical Publishing 2023-2027. This new market report identifies trends and critical developments that are shaping the market for scientific and technical publishers in the coming years.
Publishers are facing ever-greater challenges in rooting out scientific fraud. Springer’s Nature journal reported retractions of research articles reached an all-time high in 2023, exceeding 10,000. Publishers are exploring ways to detect scientific fraud before the publishing phase.
