Carpet tile has become increasingly popular in single-family homes, with both aesthetic and practical considerations supporting installation.
Cleveland OH, October 5, 2023 – According to a new study by The Freedonia Group, Global Carpets & Rugs, design trends favoring hard surface flooring have posed a challenge for the carpet industry, but consumer desire for unique, customizable designs that are sleek, modern, and affordable has offered opportunities in a somewhat unexpected category: carpet tile.
Carpet tile is mostly used in nonresidential buildings, and to a lesser extent, multifamily residential buildings, both of which are subject to heavy foot traffic and high levels of wear. It was considered more utilitarian than aesthetically appealing. However, those perceptions are changing, due to manufacturers’ efforts to offer carpet tiles with improved appearance and a wider array of colors and formats, like planks and shapes other than the traditional squares (e.g., hexagons).
Although the market remains small, carpet tile has become increasingly popular in single-family homes, with both aesthetic and practical considerations supporting installation:
The ability to mix and match different styles of carpet tile allows consumers to customize designs and create unique, bold, and modern patterns throughout their homes.
Carpet tiles also offer increased flexibility for mixing hard-and-soft flooring and can be installed in place of area rugs, helping to achieve a hard surface aesthetic while helping limit the amount of money needed to purchase more expensive hard floors.
Tiles are easier for consumers to install themselves compared to other wall-to-wall carpet options.
Carpet tiles are extremely easy to maintain. For instance, individual carpet tiles can be replaced when damaged, allowing carpet to remain well-maintained without requiring the replacement of a whole room of flooring.
While increased use of carpet tiles may eventually reduce the frequency of complete flooring system replacement, it will also allow for more frequent partial replacement sales.
