New PreK Reading Report Identifies Methods for Teaching and Technologies Spurring Growth Rockville, MD-February 28, 2023 According to a just-published report by SIMBA Information, the total market size for the PreK Reading Instructional market for 2022 was estimated to be $411 million and forecast to grow through 2025. The growth will be driven by a variety of factors including increased activities in evidence-based reading instruction as well as the use of digital technologies. Some of the reading instructional strategies that have been modified since COVID-19 to include more emphasis on interactive learning, guided reading groups and differentiated reading.
In the report, PreK Reading Materials 2023 released on February 27 2023, SIMBA found that a combination of forces is moving this market. From the teaching perspective, new targeted reading instruction methods, based on what is generally called the science of reading is creating increased demand for new types of instruction materials including workbooks based on phonics and other new strategies. In addition SIMBA has found that usage of certain types of multimedia including audiobooks are also rising as these can be better used to create better engagement and interactivity as well as for improving listening, pronunciation and comprehension skills, and can easily integrate with AI and other digital technologies.
The report has also found that although there are a variety of formats in which reading is being taught to PreK students, including print, ebooks, audio, as well as a range of alternative materials like flash cards, worksheets, paintings and graphic materials-the print format still, by far, makes up the largest segment.
Although there has been and continues to be great interest in integrating the science of reading methods for instruction, SIMBA has found that currently the approach used most often for teaching is the balanced approach that combines both foundational and language comprehension instruction. There is a recent trend to teach digital literacies, which is being accomplished by emphasizing composing and communicating using digital technologies as well as evaluating digital information.
In terms of the competitive marketplace, SIMBA found increasing competition with new entities entering the market as existing vendors are adopting new product launches as their go to market strategy. Publishers are also using mergers and acquisitions to reach new markets, gain larger market shares, and to strengthen their distribution markets. The report provides profiles of major PreK reading publishers including Scholastic Corporation; Savvas Learning Company; McGraw-Hill; Follett School Solutions; Renaissance Learning and others.
Other key issues covered in the report include the role of states in passing laws and policies to bring teacher training and preparation in line with evidence-based approaches to reading instruction; the integration of new types of technologies in reading materials such as decodable books, and the use of VR and AR technologies and other engaging features.
