US Demand for Refined Zinc to Reach 698,000 Metric Tons in 2022

by Corinne Gangloff

March 6, 2018

Cleveland, OH, March 6, 2018 — US demand for refined zinc is forecast to reach 698,000 metric tons in 2022, according to Zinc: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Demand for refined zinc in galvanizing applications is projected to account for the majority of sales gains through 2022. Advances will be driven by increasing production of galvanized steel, itself buoyed by rising production of building products and motor vehicles, as the economy continues to expand. Aging infrastructure in the US will offer opportunities for galvanized steel producers as contractors update bridges, highways, railroads, and energy facilities. These forecasts reflect current trade conditions; the potential impact of steel tariffs proposed by the Trump administration are excluded.

Refined zinc consumption in brass and bronze applications is forecast grow the fastest of the discrete segments to 2022. Demand in this segment will be supported by gains in shipments of durable goods containing electrical components and rising building product shipments. However, expansion will remain limited due to competition from lower-cost and lighter-weight materials, including zinc-based alloys.

These and other key insights are featured in Zinc: United States. This report forecasts to 2022 US refined zinc demand and production in metric tons. Total demand is segmented by application in terms of:

  • galvanized steel
  • zinc-based alloys
  • brass and bronze
  • other applications

To illustrate historical trends, total demand, total production, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2007 to 2017. Global historical average prices for high-grade zinc cited from the World Bank are provided for 2007-2017; forecasts are also reported for 2018-2022.
