Freedonia Market Research Packaged Facts US Pet Market Outlook, 2026-2027

US Pet Market Outlook, 2026-2027 Report

Industry Reports, United States

Report Overview

The Pet Industry Spotlight Shifts to Cats

Despite evident efforts by the pet industry to respond to shifting ownership trends, significant runway remains for cat-focused offerings. Historically, the US pet industry has been overtly canine-centric, and not without some business justification. But pet population trends (impacted by the housing affordability crisis, among other factors) have reversed course. Over the 2019-2025 period, total growth in the number of cat households was 4.1%, compared with a 4.2% decline in the number of dog households.

Key Themes Covered in this Report:

  • The pet industry has evolved from “products vs. services” to “products + services” to product/service subscriptions.
  • The veterinary and pet services mix has been shifting toward corporate (including franchise) networks, as is the case in the pet industry generally.
  • Looking around at what’s new in the pet market, nothing illustrates the driving force of pet health and wellness better than the current generation of high-tech pet devices.

Table of Contents

Two separate but closely interrelated factors largely determine pet industry performance: the state of the economy and trends in pet ownership. While the “pets as family” mindset remains in full swing, making pet health and wellness the driving force in sales growth and market innovation, the macroeconomic conditions confronting US pet owners (and households who’d like to have pets) present a challenging market backdrop.

National population growth is at historic lows, and remains unlikely to provide much fuel for pet population growth within the near future, unless boosted by changes in economic conditions or immigration policies and patterns. In addition, the housing affordability crisis, combined with non-housing consumer debt levels and recurring inflationary pressures, has taken its toll on pet ownership rates – especially in the case of dogs. Pet industry inflation, especially in the case of pet food and veterinary services, creates headwinds to the range of pet products and services consumed as well as pet adoption trends. Even higher-income pet owners are tightening their purse strings.

At the same time, the US pet market – historically a prime consumer market in both sales growth and resistance to economic downturns – continues to offer a compelling range of strategic opportunities. Although priorities vary and overlap, the goals of virtually all pet products and services are to enhance pet health, pamper the pet, facilitate pet care, and provide enjoyment and bonding opportunities to the pet and pet owner. Though now par for the course, the trends of humanization (human-style products and services) and premiumization (trading pet owners up to higher price fare) are perennial.

The most important new thing is that cats are no longer the “other” furry pet. Over the 2019-2025 period, total growth in the number of cat households was 4.1%, compared with a 4.2% decline in the number of dog households. Despite evident efforts by pet industry to respond accordingly, significant runway remains for cat-focused offerings.

Other key opportunities, as analyzed in the report, include omnimarket /one-stop-shopping strategies, affordability options and value offerings, private label, subscription and direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales, the retail-ization of vet and pet services, senior and overweight pets, pet insurance, and AI/high tech pet care systems and devices.

The US pet industry continues to evolve within a complex environment shaped by economic pressures, demographic shifts, and changing consumer expectations. While the market remains sizable and resilient, its growth trajectory has moderated in recent years, reflecting both post-pandemic normalization and broader macroeconomic challenges. Slower population growth, combined with affordability concerns around housing and rising consumer debt, has constrained the expansion of pet ownership. These pressures are particularly evident in declining dog ownership rates, as dogs tend to require higher ongoing expenses. At the same time, inflation across pet-related categories—especially food and veterinary care—has placed additional strain on household budgets, prompting many pet owners to reassess their spending and, in some cases, delay adoption decisions.

Despite these headwinds, the fundamental “pets as family” mindset remains firmly intact, continuing to drive demand for products and services that enhance pet health, wellness, and quality of life. This enduring emotional bond between pets and their owners supports ongoing innovation across the industry, particularly in premium offerings and health-focused solutions. At the same time, consumers are increasingly seeking value, creating a dual demand for both premiumization and affordability. This dynamic has elevated the importance of private label products, subscription services, and direct-to-consumer models, all of which offer convenience and cost savings while helping companies build stronger customer relationships.

One of the most notable shifts in the market is the growing prominence of cats. Historically overshadowed by dogs, cats are now gaining greater attention as their ownership rises and consumer perceptions highlight unmet needs in cat-focused products and services. This shift represents a significant opportunity for companies to expand offerings tailored to feline health, nutrition, and care.

In parallel, the competitive landscape is being reshaped by the emergence of “omnimarket” strategies, where companies integrate products and services to create seamless, one-stop shopping experiences. Retailers, service providers, and veterinary networks are increasingly overlapping in their offerings, responding to consumer preferences for convenience and comprehensive care. This convergence is further reinforced by the retail-ization of services, including the expansion of veterinary care, insurance, and wellness plans into more accessible, retail-driven formats.

Looking ahead, opportunities in the pet industry will be driven by the ability to balance affordability with innovation, cater to evolving pet demographics, and leverage technology to enhance care. Trends such as AI-enabled pet health solutions, products for aging and overweight pets, and integrated service ecosystems point to a future in which the industry continues to adapt to both economic realities and the deepening human-animal bond.

FAQs

Yes, macroeconomic conditions  (especially the housing affordability crisis) have created pent-up demand for pets, especially in the case of dogs. Packaged Facts data show that among those who don’t currently have pets, 30% might like to have pets, and 21% would definitely like to have pets. Among those who might or would definitely like to have pets, 75% want dogs.
The “pets as family” mindset, which continues to raise the bar for pet care. Pet health and wellness innovations are evident across pet food and pet supplies categories, from fresh (refrigerated/frozen) pet food to AI-driven pet tech systems and devices.
Partly reflecting challenging economic conditions, pet population and adoption trends now favor cats over dogs. Over the 2019-2025 period, total growth in the number of cat households was 4.1%, compared with a 4.2% decline in the number of dog households.
Pet insurance. Reflecting its strong revenue growth, pet insurance has by dollar sales topped the list of pet services categories since 2024. Packaged Facts projects continued robust growth for pet insurance, at a 17.4% compound annual growth rate over the 2025-2030 period.
As an extension of e-commerce success, subscription and (especially) direct-to-consumer sales. Subscription/autoship purchasing and direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales can tick off most of the considerations especially important to consumers in choosing where to buy pet products.
