Electric Outdoor Power Equipment - Consumer Benefits & Top Products

by Bethan Davis

June 19, 2023

The benefits of electric powered lawn care equipment include smaller, lighter tools, improved energy efficiency, and cost savings.

Electric power equipment for lawn care and gardening is gradually growing its percentage of the outdoor power tool market. Tools with internal combustion take up most of the demand at 72%, but electric products have increased in demand from 12% of the market in 2012 to 27% in 2022. The majority of electric powered products sold are smaller in size, such as leaf blowers, hedge trimmers and push mowers, while the efficiency and practicality of larger battery powered items, such as riding lawn mowers, is developing much more slowly. The demand is expected to continue gradually shifting in favor of electric power, increasing by 6.9% by 2032!

Consumer Benefits

The benefits of electric powered lawn care equipment include smaller, lighter tools, improved energy efficiency, and cost savings. Chainsaws, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, and push mowers can lose several pounds by having internal combustion engines replaced by small, rechargeable batteries. This is especially useful for older consumers or those with health issues such as arthritis. Batteries can have shorter use time per charge than an internal combustion engine per tank of gas, but for those with small outdoor spaces or those with health conditions, that trade off is worth the convenience.
Batteries are better for the environment than gasoline powered engines. Gas mowers emit 16 times the CO2 emissions per acre compared to electric mowers. Battery storage is also much more stable than gasoline storage! In addition, electricity used to recharge electric power tool batteries is far less expensive than gasoline. While up front cost for electric lawn tools may be higher than internal combustion engine equipment, the savings over time benefit the consumer.
