Freedonia Market Research Press Releases Conventional Garden Hoses Remain Largest Lawn & Garden Watering Products Market

Conventional Garden Hoses Remain Largest Lawn & Garden Watering Products Market

by Corinne Gangloff

April 3, 2023

The smaller soaker and sprinkler hose segment will grow moderately off a small base. Advances will benefit from performance advantages, a preference for soakers in drought-impacted areas, and by more socially conscious consumers.

Cleveland OH, April 3, 2023 – According to a new study by The Freedonia Group, US Lawn & Gardening Watering Products, demand for garden hoses is forecast to increase 1.1% per year to $707 million in 2027, restrained by:
  • stagnant unit sales of hoses following a pandemic-related surge in 2020 and further gains in 2021, and the maturity of the conventional hose market
  • a deceleration in price growth following the inflation- and supply chain-related increases in 2021 and 2022
Conventional hoses will remain the largest segment and will account for 62% of hose sales in 2027:
  • Sales will be sustained by consumers who will continue to purchase these hoses for general use around the home.
  • Gains will also derive from some disgruntled buyers of expandable and lightweight hoses – which were partly responsible for the declining sales of conventional hoses following their introduction to the market – choosing to revert back to conventional products.
The smaller soaker and sprinkler hose segment will grow moderately off a small base. Advances will benefit from performance advantages, a preference for soakers in drought-impacted areas, and by more socially conscious consumers.

Future demand for next generation lightweight hoses will be considerably slower than in the 2012-2017 period when expandable hoses and other lightweight compact products were first introduced and distribution expanded. Growth was slower but still at a rapid pace from 2017 to 2022 because, in addition to the general spike in sales for hoes, many new versions were introduced to the market, providing large sales gains as consumers purchased them as inexpensive replacements, new novelties, or extra hoses. Going forward, gains will largely stem from the introduction of higher quality expandables and newer types of lightweight compact hoses that feature improved performance, particularly with greater durability.
