Demand set to drop slightly in 2023 on high interest rates, falling home sales
Cleveland OH, November 27, 2023— US demand for household furniture is forecast to grow 1.5% per year in nominal terms through 2027, according to Household Furniture: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Advances will largely reflect price increases, with faster gains restrained by declines in home completions and weakness in real (inflation-adjusted) residential improvement spending. Increases in disposable personal income will support consumer purchases of premium furniture. Sales of used furniture conducted through electronic marketplaces – such as Facebook Marketplace, Chairish, and Craigslist – will also impede further gains.
This report includes the results of the Freedonia Focus Reports National Online Consumer Survey of 1,500 US adults (age 18+). Respondents offered actionable insight on furniture purchasing behavior, including an analysis of 21 decision factors. Experience purchasing used or custom furniture was also assessed, as were experience purchasing online or via rent-to-own programs, and likelihood of making such purchases.
These and other key insights are featured in Household Furniture: United States. This report provides annual forecasts for 2023 through 2027 for US household furniture demand and shipments in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level. Total demand is segmented by product in terms of:
upholstered
wood
metal
plastic and other household furniture such as fiber, rattan, and wicker
To illustrate historical trends, total demand, total shipments, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2012 to 2022.
Sales of mattresses and box springs are excluded from the scope of this report, as are outdoor furniture articles made of ceramic, concrete, or stone. Sales of used furniture are excluded. Sales of furniture for home offices are also not included; they are included in Office Furniture: United States. Re-exports of household furniture are excluded from demand and trade figures.
