Global demand for motorcycle lubricants is forecast to rise an average of 3.8% per year to 1.6 million metric tons in 2024. Increasing personal income levels and consumer spending in many developing countries will boost motorcycle ownership, benefiting lubricant demand. However, gains will be limited by surging demand for e-bikes and electric scooters and motorcycles – which require much lower volumes of lubricants than ICE motorcycles – in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.

Despite a decline in motorcycle sales due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, related lubricant demand in 2020 continued to grow due to an increase in motorcycles in use, as well as motorcycles’ status as an essential mode of transportation in many countries.

Asia/Pacific to Remain Leading Regional Market for Motorcycle Lubricants

The Asia/Pacific region is expected to account for 69% of global motorcycle demand through 2024, as growing consumer spending power and limited public transportation options in developing countries in the region boost demand healthy increases for motorcycle as well as for motorcycle lubricants. The region features the three largest consumers of motorcycle lubricants – China, India, and Indonesia – all of whom will have varying effects on demand:

  • India and Indonesia will continue to see rapid demand growth as personal incomes rise, allowing for an expansion of their motorcycle parcs.
  • Demand for motorcycle lubricants in China will experience below average growth, as automobile sales rise and the country’s public transportation system expands.

Africa/Mideast Region Will Experience the Fastest Gains

Growth in consumer spending will boost demand for motorcycles in the Africa/Mideast region, in particular light ICE models, which will benefit engine oil demand. Demand will also be supported by:

  • the relatively harsh environment will require more frequent lubricant changes
  • the popularity of small, basic motorcycle models, which use less-advanced formulations that often require more frequent changing

Engine Oils Will Continue to Dominate Demand Through 2024

In 2019, engine oils represented 88% of global motorcycle lubricant demand, and they will continue to account for the vast majority of demand through 2024. Engine oil gains will be supported by an acceleration in ICE motorcycle production and growth in the ICE motorcycle parc going forward. However, even stronger advances will be restrained by:

  • double-digit growth in sales of electric models in some regions, as these models do not require engine oils
