This study analyzes US demand for packaging materials used for cannabis products, segmented by packaging and container type in US dollars for 2018, 2019, and 2024. Retail sales for cannabis products are also sized and segmented by cannabis delivery format. In addition, cannabis production volumes (in dry pounds) at the grower level are reported.


Retail sales of cannabis (i.e., marijuana- and hemp-derived) products include:

  • medical marijuana
  • adult-use (i.e., recreational) marijuana
  • hemp-based CBD products
  • hemp seed oil products

Hemp-derived products exclude those intended for industrial end-uses, such as industrial fibers or biofuels. Also excluded are any cannabis-based products sold illegally through black market channels.

Cannabis product retail sales are segmented by delivery format in terms of:

  • flower (bud and pre-rolls)
  • vaporizer cartridges
  • tinctures (drops and sprays)
  • edibles
  • pills and capsules
  • topicals (e.g., creams, lotions, salves, other cosmetics)
  • ingestible oils
  • other delivery formats (e.g., hash, powders, transdermal patches)

The types of packaging used for the above cannabis products include:

  • product containers
  • labels
  • shipping containers
  • caps and closures
  • exit packaging

Product containers are further segmented by the following types:

  • jars
  • bottles
  • folding cartons
  • bags and pouches
  • tubes
  • metal tins
  • vials
  • other containers (e.g., blister packaging, plastic boxes, cloth/canvas bags)
