Study #: 3849 | Published: 12/2020 | Pages: 229 | Individual User License: US$ 5,600

US demand for packaged lawn and garden consumables – including fertilizer, pesticides, growing media, seeds, and mulch – is expected to increase 2.2% per year to $10.3 billion in 2024, held down by weak volume growth. However, gains in market value will be supported by increased participation rates in home gardening activities, in addition to the continued shift toward value-added products that emphasize convenience and ease-of-use. The best sales opportunities are expected for products that:

  • are seen as eco-friendly (particularly with regards to pollinators and other desirable species) and safe for use around pets and children
  • can be used in lower doses or in fewer applications, thus reducing labor and environmental impact
  • are easy and convenient to use for both novice and experienced gardeners

Greater Time at Home & Emphasis on Outdoor Socializing Support Short-Term Gains

With COVID-19 expected to continue impacting daily habits at least through 2021, lawn and garden consumables demand will benefit from people spending more time at home. An increasing number of households are expected to turn to DIY gardening and lawn care in lieu of hiring a service, which will support demand for higher value, consumer-friendly formulations. Additionally, the importance of outdoor socializing – at home, and at restaurants and other public locations when possible – will further promote investment in outdoor living spaces. Over the longer term, gardening is expected to remain above pre-pandemic levels, although some households are expected to return to pre-COVID-19 gardening habits once the pandemic is under greater control and the rate of new hobbyists entering the market is expected to slow considerably.

Gains Supported by Value-Added Formulations & Products

Users of lawn and garden consumables in both the consumer and professional segments will continue to increasingly favor products that minimize work and the potential for environmental harm. Higher value formulations – such as extended-release chemicals preventing the need for multiple applications, or products effective at much lower doses – are expected to fare particularly well. Products such as soil amendments and seeds with improved traits that reduce the need for extensive work – including extra chemical treatments or heavy watering – are also forecast to exhibit above average gains. Improvements to packaging will promote ease-of-use and increase the value of these products.

Environmental Concerns & Competition from Inexpensive Products to Prevent Faster Gains

Although products with improved performance traits are expected to increase their share of the market, continued heavy competition from bulk products and older inexpensive chemicals will restrict overall market advances. In addition, concerns regarding the effect that excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers has on the environment will constrain volume growth in these categories.
