The COVID-19 pandemic is not projected to impact the global pharmaceutical packaging industry significantly due to the essential nature of drug therapies. During the pandemic, individuals will continue to take prescription and over-the-counter medicines to treat existing ailments.

Key findings in the Pharmaceutical Packaging study:

Demand for pharmaceutical packaging products in the US is forecast to grow 5.2% per year to $29.9 billion in 2024. Gains will result from:

  • the expanding use of high-value containers, closures, and accessories that enhance drug delivery and security and promote better patient adherence with prescribed medication schedules
  • the increasing importance of packaging as new sophisticated therapies penetrate the market

However, intensifying pressures on drug makers to lower prices will heighten price sensitivity for pharmaceutical packaging. The COVID-19 pandemic is not projected to impact the industry significantly due to the essential nature of drug therapies. During the pandemic, individuals will continue to take prescription and over-the-counter medicines. In the long term, there may be greater development of antiviral treatments and vaccinations, which could boost demand to an extent.

Parenteral Drug Applications Will Provide the Fastest Growth for Primary Containers

Parenteral containers will post the fastest rate of growth among primary pharmaceutical packaging, both in unit and value terms. Advances in injectable and infusion therapies for cancer, diabetes, viral diseases, neurological disorders, and other complex medical conditions will underlie gains. Prefillable syringes, especially self-injection devices, are expected to offer the best growth opportunities, with glass and plastic vials continuing to account for the largest share of unit demand based on their cost advantages.

Plastic Bottles Will Continue to Lead Unit Demand Among Primary Containers

Their low cost, along with improving performance properties, will keep plastic bottles the most widely employed containers for oral pharmaceuticals and will broaden their opportunities in topical medication. Standard oval, square, and round bottles for the bulk and prescription dose packaging of tablets, capsules, caplets, and powders will dominate both revenue and unit demand. However, demand for dispensing bottles will grow at a faster rate due to their use with liquid and low viscosity topical drugs.

Specialty Closures, Trays, RFID Labels, & Intelligent Components Lead Secondary Packaging

Dispensing closures, parenteral stoppers, thermoformed trays, clamshell packs, security-enhanced labels, and intelligent components will provide the fastest growth opportunities among secondary pharmaceutical packaging products. These products have high-value features that improve drug delivery, barrier protection, convenience, product security, and recordkeeping. Demand for most other pharmaceutical closures, secondary containers, and packaging accessories will expand at a slower pace, as they consist mostly of commodities offered by multiple suppliers with limited pricing flexibility.

Industry Will Remain Fragmented Despite Consolidation

About 650 merchant producers and contract services firms produce packaging products for the US pharmaceutical industry. The industry is in the midst of a consolidation phase as an increasing number of smaller participants are forced out of business due to their limited economies of scale. Moreover, most leading competitors are pursuing product line and market expansion through acquisitions. For example, Amcor recently expanded its position in convertible flexible pharmaceutical packaging by acquiring Bemis.
