Channel One (New York), producer of a daily educational news show, is offering curriculum targeting nonfiction literacy and critical thinking skills.
The curriculum is a subscription offering for grades 3-5 and 6-8. It uses nonfiction video and text that integrates English language arts with areas that include science, geography and college and career readiness. Students complete activities, do writing exercises and take short formative assessments to demonstrate understanding.
In the fall, Channel One will introduce a searchable database of supplementary assets to the curriculum including standards alignment and themed content bundles highlighting significant historic events. The digital archive is intended to help teachers develop their own lessons based on authentic news topics that are tied to Common Core and other curriculum standards. As blended learning and one-to-one computing increase, the archive also will provide digital video and related multimedia content for tablets accessible on classroom devices.•
