The US-China trade war reduced the demand and prices for US hardwoods, as China imposed retaliatory tariffs. On the other hand, the tariffs on Canadian softwood imports have increased the prices and reduced the supply of softwood lumber in the US market.
Some of the environmental and regulatory factors that affect the US forestry industry include limits on the size and nature of harvesting operations, requirements to reforest harvested area, pollution controls, permitting approval processes, and voluntary certification by industry organizations.
In 2021, revenues started to rebound from COVID-19 pandemic era lows, supported by growth in inflation-adjusted wood products shipments and packaging output, driving revenues to a peak in 2022.
