Global Open Access Journal Publishing

Report Overview

This report forecasts to 2028 the global open access (OA) journal publishing market in US dollars. The market data is provided by metric: OA journals revenue, scholarly journal revenue, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) OA journal titles, and DOAJ OA journal articles.

To illustrate historical trends, market data is provided for 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The coverage of OA in this report includes journals listed in the DOAJ and publisher members of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA). Subject matter ranges across scholarly and professional publishing, primarily scientific, technical, and medical (STM), but also social sciences and the humanities. Journals in this report are defined as electronic periodicals and peer-reviewed journals that are published more than once a year. Open access means articles are freely available online without paywalls or subscriptions.

Sales are global and include all publishing that fits the definition of subject and level common to Simba's research. Scientific, technical, medical, and social science publishing – particularly research and specialty journal publishing – is dominated by English-language journals. Significant numbers of OA articles are also produced in Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Chinese. These languages are particularly important in social science and humanities publishing, and the more applied aspects of engineering and healthcare.

Other various topics, including profiles of pertinent leading companies, are covered in this report. A full outline of report items by page is available in the Table of Contents.
