Report Overview

This report forecasts to 2029 global sales of scientific and technical (S&T) publishing by product form in nominal US dollars. To illustrate historical trends, total sales and segments are provided for 2022-2025. Product form segments include journals, online content, abstracting and indexing services, books, other product forms such as audio and video content.

World regional shares of S&T publishing sales for 2024 are provided for North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific, and Other Regions (primarily the Middle East, Africa, and South America).

Scientific and technical publishing includes content and services covering hard science, or science that deals with things that can be observed and measured. Sciences include bioscience, chemistry, mathematics, physics as well as the wide array of sub-topics within those areas.

Note that the term “life sciences” is often used interchangeably with biosciences, although the area is a subset of bioscience that focuses on areas related to human health and disease. Because of its alignment with medical research, life sciences revenue is excluded from the definition of scientific and technical publishing used in this report.

The technology subject area encompasses upper-level computer science, and all fields of engineering, including architecture, civil, electrical, electronics, and mechanical engineering, and the sub-topics within those areas. Note that there is increasing crossover between scientific and technical disciplines, such as biochemical engineering.

Scientific and technology publishing is directed to researchers and students in upper-level courses, as well as academic libraries, learned societies, corporations, and other research entities and institutions.
