What Will Drive Growth in Fencing?

Gains will be driven by the need to repair and replace large portions of the existing fence stock, especially in the residential market. Additionally, growth in single-family housing completions will support demand as builders include fences to improve value and marketability. The increased adoption of high value fencing such as wood privacy, ornamental metal, and plastic and composite fencing will help boost value gains.

Metal to Remain the Most Used Fencing Material

Metal is the largest fencing material segment in both value and linear feet terms, and will account for half of fencing demand gains through 2022. Metal is popular primarily because of its durability, minimal maintenance requirements, and security attributes. Additionally, metal fencing is available at a variety of price points. Gains will be bolstered by growing demand for high-end ornamental metal fencing in the residential and commercial markets. Overall metal fencing demand will be supported by the continued specification of wire fencing in the nonbuilding and agricultural markets because of its low cost and versatility.

Residential Market to Remain the Largest and Fastest Growing

The residential market accounted for half of fencing demand in 2017 in value terms and will continue to account for the largest share of sales in 2022. Fencing products are utilized extensively in the residential market, particularly in single-family housing, to provide security, mark boundaries, and increase privacy. Demand for fencing installed during residential improvement and repair projects will be supported by the addition of fencing on existing properties and the need to maintain the large existing wood fencing stock, as wood is the least durable fencing material.

Plastic & Composite Fencing to Grow at the Fastest Pace

Plastic and composite fencing is expected to record the fastest growth through 2022 from a relatively small base, primarily due to its increasing use in place of wood fencing in residential applications. Compared to wood fencing, plastic and composite fencing is significantly more durable and has minimal maintenance requirements. Advances in the design of plastic and composite fencing products that allow them to better resemble wood will further boost demand, as consumers desire the wood aesthetic.
