Industry Reports, United States

Report Overview

Consumer-Oriented Markets in Developing Regions Drive Amines Growth

Adding Detergent to Washing Machine

Global demand for amines will be driven by rising demand for high value consumer-oriented goods made from amines as a result of rising middle class populations in developing countries, especially in Asia.

Key Findings in the Global Amines Study:

Amines Benefit from Growing Personal Care and Cleaning Products Markets

Growth for amines will result in part from increasing demand in the personal care and cleaning products markets, which together accounted for 30 percent of amines sales in 2015. These consumer-oriented markets will benefit from increasing disposable incomes of the growing middle class populations in China and other Asian nations, which will allow consumers to purchase greater volumes of higher value goods that are more likely to incorporate specialty amine-based surfactants. Fatty amines, and specialty amines such as DMAPA are widely used to create high value surfactants that are milder and more effective than conventional surfactants.

Mixed Outlook for Pesticide Amines

Pesticides are the largest market for amines, a result of the use of ethanolamines and alkylamines in the synthesis of a wide variety of pesticides, including glyphosate, the world’s most consumed pesticide active ingredient. In some areas, amines demand will benefit from increasing use of these pesticides. For example, glyphosate consumption in China is likely to increase if the country allows greater use of genetically modified crops. In other countries, however, rising public opposition to certain pesticides -- including glyphosate, neonicotinoids, and others -- will restrain demand.

Diverse Applications with Many Niche Opportunities

The broad range of applications in which amines are used will provide a number of opportunities in smaller markets or within certain regions and countries. For example, amines used to produce plastic additives will see healthy growth opportunities, as will amines finding use in water treatment as biocides and corrosion inhibitors. While automotive markets -- including lubricant and fuel additives and rubber processing chemicals -- are generally mature at the global level, rising motor vehicle ownership in developing countries will stimulate local demand in these markets as well.

Study Coverage

This Freedonia industry study analyzes the 6.1 million metric ton amines industry. It presents historical demand (2005, 2010, and 2015) and forecasts (2020 and 2025) by product (ethanolamines, alkylamines, fatty amines, specialty amines, ethyleneamines), market (pesticides, personal care products, cleaning products, rubber, water treatment chemicals, lubricants), and world region. The study also analyzes company market share and presents competitive analysis on major industry participants, including Akzo Nobel, BASF, Dow, Eastman, and Huntsman.
