Report Overview

Electric Buses to Drive Market Growth

The shift to electric buses – which began during the last decade – is expected to accelerate through 2035, driving global market gains. The availability of electric buses is expected to increase around the world during the next decade, and the next generation of buses will be significantly more capable than predecessors. Governments – at the national, regional, and municipal levels – and international bodies (e.g., the EU) will continue to actively promote the use of electric models through subsidies, regulatory changes, strategic investments, the expansion of charging infrastructure, and support for bus manufacturers.

Key Questions Answered in the Report:

  • What regions will see the strongest electric bus sales growth?
  • What types of buses will benefit the most from electrification through 2035?
  • What countries have established near-term and long-term electric bus targets?
Featuring 126 Tables & 79 Figures!

Table of Contents

Global bus demand – which exceeded 582,000 units in 2025 – is forecast to grow nearly 4.5% per year through 2030 to 724,000 units. The expansion of the market will be driven by public and private operators upgrading their fleets; the accelerating shift to electric buses; advances in global tourism activity; and the growing use of private transportation services around the world.

The Asia/Pacific Region’s Dominance of the Global Bus Market to Continue

Led by China and India, the Asia/Pacific region is expected to account for nearly two-thirds of new bus demand during the 2025-2030 period. Because multiple regional countries are at the forefront of the electric bus revolution, sales of electric models are expected to increase nearly 11% per year in the region from a high 2025 base. Governments in China, India, Japan, and other Asia/Pacific nations are actively driving the shift to electric models through a variety of measures, ranging from subsidies to charging infrastructure investment. The use of buses for both intercity and intracity bus transportation will continue to grow in developing Asia/Pacific nations, and operators will purchase new buses as ridership rates climb. Cities throughout the Asia/Pacific region will launch initiatives that will drive spending on buses.

Electric Buses to Power Global Market through 2035

Building on the strong 2019-2025 performance, world electric bus sales are expected to climb nearly 12% per annum through 2030. Although electric models will capture market share rapidly in all regions, China will continue to account for the bulk of electric buses sold globally. During the next decade, growth in the mature Chinese electric bus market will be largely driven by replacement bus sales as the first generation of models sold in the country reach the end of their lifespan. Governments around the world have established electric bus targets, adopted new regulations, made strategic investments, and expanded their country’s charging infrastructure in recent years; such initiatives will be a critical driver of segment gains between 2025 and 2035. Finally, electric bus availability is expected to increase sharply during this time, and the next generation of models will offer better performance than predecessors.

Transit Buses to Outperform Counterparts between 2025 and 2030

Globally, transit buses are expected to register the largest market gains and record the fastest growth during the forecast period. National, regional, and local governments around the world are upgrading their transit bus services, expanding their public bus transportation networks, promoting the use of buses (e.g., subsidies), and encouraging the shift to electric transit buses. During the next decade, transit buses have favorable growth prospects because they will benefit from the electrification of transportation to a much greater extent than motor coaches and other buses. The introduction of new conventional and electric transit buses will help drive growth around the world through 2030. >

Transit Bus & Motor Coach Sales to Grow about 5% through 2030

The transit bus and motor coach segments will account for nearly three-fourths of global market gains during the 2025-2030 period. Transit bus sales are expected to grow because of additional government investment in public bus transit networks; fleet modernization programs; the ongoing shift to electric models; urbanization; and rising bus ridership in numerous countries. The construction of new bus rapid transit (BRT) systems around the world will also drive transit bus use.
The motor coach segments will perform well between 2025 and 2030 as operators replace aging buses. Because of evolving rider preferences around the world and the development of the next generation of new models, motor coaches will continue to capture market share from smaller buses, vans, and specialty models. The expansion of the global tourism and private transportation sectors will contribute greatly to growth as well.
