This study analyzes global supply of and demand for industrial mechanical fasteners. The following types of products – both standard-grade and aerospace-grade – are included:

  • externally threaded fasteners such as bolts, screws, pins, rods, studs, and various plastic devices
  • internally threaded fasteners, such as hex and square nuts (e.g., acorn, crowned, flat, heavy-duty, machine, panel, track, and weld nuts), flanged nuts, locknuts, threaded inserts, and nut/washer assemblies
  • nonthreaded fasteners such as rivets, pins, washers as well as nonthreaded pins, bushings, retaining rings, stud receivers, and various plastic fasteners
  • application-specific (or specialized) standard-grade fasteners, including miscellaneous formed fasteners, customized standoffs, brackets, clamps, latches and couplings, threaded rods and twin buckles for structural use, and lead anchor expansion sleeves; and a variety of specialty plastic fasteners, such as wire/cable ties, hose clamps, clips, anchors, and expansion sleeves

For the purposes of this study, the term “aerospace-grade” refers to a category of high-performance industrial fasteners manufactured to the specifications of aerospace/defense companies and agencies. End-use applications for these fasteners, however, are not confined to the aircraft/aerospace industries; they can also include construction, high-performance automobiles, industrial machinery, and various other settings where the capabilities of such fasteners are warranted.

Demand is also analyzed by the following markets:

  • original equipment manufacturing (OEM)
    • motor vehicles
    • machinery
    • fabricated metal products
    • electronic equipment
    • electrical equipment
    • aerospace equipment
    • other OEM markets (furniture and wood products, nonautomotive and nonaerospace transportation equipment, and other products such as advertising displays and signs and fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems)
  • maintenance and repair operations (MRO) in services, industrial, and public/institutional sectors
  • construction (excluding fasteners utilized at manufacturing plants to produce windows, doors, fence sections, and other products used in construction applications)

Historical data (2008, 2013, and 2018) and forecasts for 2023 are provided in current dollars for demand, shipments, and net exports for industrial fasteners overall and for the aggregate standard-grade and aerospace-grade fastener product categories. Demand totals for individual countries are also presented in local currency terms.
