This detailed study examines the global market for pharmaceutical packaging containers, closures, and accessories.

For purposes of this study, pharmaceutical packaging product demand is defined as the value of finished containers, closures, and accessories sold by merchant companies and produced or assembled internally by pharmaceutical manufacturers and contract packaging firms. In 2018, the estimated value of captive production by drug makers amounted to approximately 30% of global pharmaceutical packaging demand. The remaining 70% consisted of finished containers, closures, and accessories supplied by packaging manufacturers or contract packaging firms.

Products covered under the scope of this study include:

  • primary containers, including plastic bottles, blister packaging, prefillable syringes, parenteral vials and ampuls, prefillable inhalers, pouches, medication tubes, IV containers, glass bottles and jars, and other containers, such as strip packs, paperboard boxes, and various specialty containers
  • closures, including plastic, metal, and other types in child-resistant, tamper evident, and other formats
  • secondary containers, including folding boxes and cartons, corrugated shipping containers, and other consisting of thermoformed kits and trays, and blister and clamshell packs
  • prescription containers, including plastic vials, blister packs, and other types
  • labels, including security, standard, and specialty types, and package inserts
  • packaging accessories, including intelligent components, shrink bands and wraps, tamper-evident seals, desiccants, and other such as packaging and shipping supplies

Regions & Countries

Pharmaceutical packaging demand is given for the following global regions and countries:

  • North America (United States, Canada and Mexico)
  • Central and South America (Brazil)
  • Western Europe (France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom)
  • Eastern Europe (Russia)
  • Asia/Pacific (China, India, Japan, South Korea)
  • Africa/Mideast (Turkey)

The study provides historical data (2008, 2013, 2018) and demand forecasts for 2023 for pharmaceutical packaging products in millions of US dollars (including inflation) by type, geographical region, and selected countries. Unit demand for the same years are provided for most product groups. The terms “shipments”, “production”, and “output” are used interchangeably in the study, as are the terms “demand”, “sales”, and “market”, which are defined as domestic shipments, plus imports, minus exports.
