US demand will be spurred by increasing interest in using roof coatings to create cool roofs. White and light-colored roof coatings can be applied over existing roof surfaces – especially those with dark-colored materials – to create surfaces that better deflect solar radiation and minimize heat transfer to building interiors. The use of cool roofing can thus provide reduced utility bills and significant energy savings – often far more than the cost of installing a roof coating.

Interest in Restoring Older Roofs Will Boost Use of Roof Coatings

The US features a large number of structures with roofing materials at or near the end of their expected product lifespans that will eventually require replacement. Rather than invest in an expensive reroofing project, an increasing number of commercial building owners will opt to instead apply a liquid-applied roof coating to rejuvenate older roofs and repair minor damages. As many roof coatings are warrantied for 10 years – if not longer – the application of roof coatings can allow consumers to protect commercial buildings while allowing them to wait for a more convenient time to take on a reroofing project.

Acrylic Coatings to Continue to Lead Market

Acrylic products accounted for the largest share of liquid-applied roof coatings demand in the US in 2016 and will continue to do so through 2021. Acrylic liquid-applied roof coatings offer a wide range of favorable performance properties, such as resistance to moisture and premature degradation caused by changes in temperature. However, demand for acrylic roof coatings will be spurred by their ability to meet cool roofing criteria. Most acrylic products are white or light-colored and thus better deflect sunlight and minimize heat transfer. As building code jurisdictions – especially in the southern half of the US – mandate the use of cool roofing to boost energy efficiency, construction professionals will increasingly specify acrylic roof coatings to meet code requirements.

Interest in Mitigating Storm Damage to Boost Use of High-Performance Coatings

The US experienced multiple severe weather events in 2016 and 2017 that caused widespread roof damage due to wind, heavy precipitation, and hail. One way in which roofing professionals will reduce the incidence of storm-related damage in the future will be to apply roof coatings, to both existing roofs and newly installed roofing materials. Such products as silicone and blended roof coatings offer superior resistance to the rain, snow, and hailstones that can damage roofs. Furthermore, in the event that a coating is damaged, a new layer of coating can be applied for far less expense than new roofing materials.
