Report Overview
Cooling Costs & Code Compliance Are Reshaping Roof Ventilation
From soaring AC bills to new building codes, the roofing ventilation market is heating up with innovation and retrofit demand.
Key themes covered in this report:
- accelerating adoption of ridge and soffit vents due to stricter building codes and energy efficiency standards
- rising cooling costs are driving upgrades to attic ventilation systems
- the growing role of hybrid ventilation setups that blend static and powered vent technologies
- the factors fueling demand for easy-to-install retrofit ventilation solutions
- the impact of labor shortages and contractor preferences on vent design and product selection
Featuring 52 Tables & 25 Figures!
US demand for roofing ventilation products totaled $1.8 billion in 2024 and is forecast to rise 2.5% per year to $2.0 billion in 2029, supported by stricter building codes and energy efficiency goals. However, the high costs of advanced systems and elevated levels of reroofing activity during the previous five-year period will restrain greater gains.
Codes, Climate, & Catastrophes: A Regulatory Tailwind
Stricter mandates and climate resilience are reshaping ventilation demands across the country. Building codes such as the IECC and California’s Title 24 are facilitating the use of more effective attic and roof ventilation systems that mitigate heat accumulation, prevent moisture damage, and resist fire. This is especially pronounced in wildfire-prone regions, where ember-resistant vents – featuring metal mesh, intumescent linings, or self-closing mechanisms – are becoming required in some areas. Similarly, the rise of solar panels and cool roofing materials alters attic temperature dynamics, necessitating higher efficiency venting to avoid condensation and structural degradation. Insurance providers are also offering premium discounts for homes with upgraded or code-compliant ventilation.
Retrofit, Reroof & Rethink: Upsell Potential & Market Gaps
The replacement market and new formats like modular housing are opening fresh opportunity lanes:
- With most US roofing projects being replacements rather than new builds, contractors are increasingly presenting ventilation as a valuable and necessary upgrade. Homeowners are more receptive to enhancements that improve comfort, reduce utility bills, or qualify them for insurance incentives.
- Modular and offsite construction is also contributing to demand for integrated, compact ventilation components that can be factory-installed. Contractors are also embracing pre-assembled, labor-saving systems such as vent kits with matching ridge caps or pre-flashed assemblies to streamline installation amid widespread labor shortages.
Smarter, Simpler, & Sustainable: The New Product Standard
Product innovation is targeting efficiency, ease of installation, and environmental friendliness. The market is seeing an increase in demand for advanced ventilation systems that blend passive efficiency with smart functionality. From ridge vents enhanced with baffles and filters to solar-powered attic fans controlled via thermostats, the industry is embracing solutions that offer more control, durability, and performance transparency. This shift aligns with the growing use of digital roof modeling tools, which allow ventilation to be pre-specified based on building design and climate needs.
Additionally, green building standards like LEED and Passive House are now incorporating attic ventilation into their criteria, prompting manufacturers to emphasize airflow ratings, material sustainability, and thermal impact. Bundled attic system packages – combining ventilation with insulation, radiant barriers, and air sealing – are becoming more popular in both new construction and retrofits, delivering full-system value and helping meet the broader goals of energy efficiency and occupant comfort.

Roofing Ventillation Products Report Scope
Ventilation products – used most often on structures with steep-slope roofs – are an important part of roofing systems as they prevent buildups of hot and cold air and water vapor, extending the lifespan of roofs and minimizing the incidence of leaks and ice dams.
Roofing ventilation products have two basic functions:
- Intake vents bring outside air into an attic space.
- Exhaust vents expel air inside an attic space.
Some vents are classified as dual-purpose types that can either take in exterior air or expel interior air. Often whether a vent is being used in an intake or exhaust capacity depends on its placement on the roof.
Vents may also be classified as static or active depending on whether they actively move air through the ventilated space. Active vents, most of which have a powered fan or blower attached, are seeing increases in market share, particularly those attached to “smart” systems that control interior air temperatures, humidity, and indoor air quality.
Roofing ventilation products can be classified into a number of basic product types, including:
- Ridge vents: generally installed at the top of steep-slope roofs, these vents allow air to exit a roof while keeping out moisture, insects, and particulates.
- Hip vents: similar to ridge vents but desired for use on sleep-slope roofs with more diagonal than horizontal surfaces.
- Off-ridge vents: similar to ridge vents but typically installed below the ridge line (as an exhaust vent) or above the eave (for intake purposes).
- Box vents: also known as louver vents, these vents are installed on a roof surface and vent the entire space of an attic or upper floor.
- Soffit vents: installed along the eaves of a roof, these vents feature small holes that allow cool air to enter a roof without letting in animals or particulates.
- Gable vents: installed on a gable of a roof, these vents allow air to enter and leave an attic space; because of this, they must be installed in pairs at opposite ends of a roof.
- Turbine and fan vents: vents with turbines or fans installed in them to better move air in or out of a structure.
- Eave vents and vented drip edge: installed at the eave, these vents act as intake vents to bring fresh air into the ventilated space.
Excluded from consideration in this report are:
- gable vents used for architectural purposes or building space ventilation
- cupola vents
- other types of vents, such as those installed in a wall (and thus not considered part of the roof assembly)
- vents or stacks installed as part of a home’s plumbing or HVAC system – such as a vent used as part of the oven hood
