US Foodservice Disposables Report

Industry Reports, United States

Report Overview

Foodservice Disposables Product Mix Continues to Shift

Takeout containers, cups, lids, trays, clamshells, and delivery packaging will see continued gains as carryout, drive-thru, delivery, and grab-and-go remain core parts of the US foodservice market. As operators focus on portability, food quality, and customer satisfaction, higher-performance disposables are expected to capture a growing share of demand.

Key Themes Covered in this Report:

  • Shift Toward Higher-Value & Performance-Oriented Formats: Product mix is moving toward packaging that supports off-premises dining, improves food quality, and enhances convenience.
  • Sustainability Through Packaging Optimization: Source reduction, lightweighting, recyclability, compostability, and operational efficiency are shaping product development more than broad material substitution.
  • Application-Specific Material Competition: Plastic, paper, molded fiber, aluminum, and foam products will compete based on cost, performance, sustainability requirements, and end-use needs.

Table of Contents

Demand for foodservice disposables (single-use packaging and serviceware) in the US totaled $28.2 billion in 2025 and is forecast to grow 3.4% per year to $33.3 billion in 2030:

  • Growth in market value will come from both unit gains and a modest increase in average prices coming mostly from a shift in product mix towards higher-value disposables.
  • Unit demand will benefit from growth in restaurant traffic and food-away-from-home spending, although gains will be moderated by sustainability initiatives and cost-control efforts that reduce unnecessary disposable use.

Sustainability Efforts Shift from Materials Substitution to Packaging Optimization

Foodservice operators increasingly evaluate packaging based on its ability to reduce costs, improve operational efficiency, and maintain customer satisfaction while meeting sustainability goals. Efforts to optimize packaging systems through source reduction, lightweighting, labor savings, and performance improvements are expected to have a greater impact on the market than large-scale shifts between specific packaging materials.

Off-Premises Dining Becomes the Industry's Permanent Operating Model

Carryout, drive-thru, delivery, and grab-and-go foodservice have become permanent features of the food-away-from-home market. As operators increasingly optimize for portability, food quality, and customer satisfaction, demand will be strong for high-performance packaging that meets all of these criteria.

Material Competition Becomes More Nuanced & Application Specific

Material selection is increasingly driven by application-specific performance, cost, and sustainability requirements rather than broad shifts away from traditional materials. Plastic products are expected to remain highly competitive, especially as recycled content increases and bioplastics find growing market niches. Molded fiber and paper products will continue to gain share based on sustainability and improved performance. Foam products will face gradual market losses but retain a share of cost-conscious hot food applications.

Foodservice Disposables Formats

Factors that determine the mix of foodservice disposables include cost, product performance, operational efficiency, and sustainability, though requirements vary significantly by application.

Traditional disposable formats such as plastic cups, lids, containers, cutlery, and foam products will continue to account for a significant share of US foodservice disposables demand, representing a major portion of total value in 2025. These products remain widely used because they offer low cost, strong performance, and familiarity across restaurant, institutional, and retail store applications. However, some traditional formats are expected to see comparatively slower growth going forward, as sustainability initiatives, regulatory pressures, and operator cost-control efforts encourage reduced material use and greater reliance on optimized packaging systems.
In contrast, higher-growth formats – including molded fiber containers, paper-based cups and food packaging, compostable serviceware, recycled-content plastics, and higher-performance takeout and delivery packaging – are expected to gain share. This shift is being driven largely by the continued strength of off-premises dining, including carryout, drive-thru, delivery, and grab-and-go meals, which is increasing demand for packaging that preserves food quality, improves portability, and supports customer satisfaction. At the same time, sustainability goals are accelerating demand for source-reduced, recyclable, compostable, and fiber-based disposables, although material selection will remain highly application specific based on cost, performance, and end-use requirements.
