Rising ESRD population, improving treatment will spur revenue gains
Cleveland OH, August 21, 2023 — US kidney dialysis center revenues are forecast to advance 5.2% per year in nominal dollars through 2027, according to
Kidney Dialysis Centers: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Advances will reflect growth in the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population, a consequence of the graying of the US population. In addition, providers will benefit from reduction in patient mortality as treatment quality improves. Faster advances in value terms will be restrained by ongoing government healthcare cost-containment efforts. Increasing awareness and use of donor exchange programs, which will boost transplantation rates, will also restrain growth in dialysis demand. Advances will also be restrained by the long-term effects of the July 2019 Advancing American Kidney Health executive order, which aims to prevent ESRD, encourage a shift from center- to home-based care, and boost transplant rates. In addition, the Health Resources & Services Administration announced the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network Modernization Initiative in March 2023, which includes a doubling in government investment in organ procurement and transplantation. The initiative is in the design and strategy development phase as of summer 2023, with implementation expected to begin in spring 2024.
