Pandemic-induced sales highs will weigh on replacement needs for artificial trees
Cleveland, OH, June 14, 2024 — US demand for Christmas trees in nominal terms is forecast to see 1.5% average annual declines through 2028 from an elevated 2023 base, according to Christmas Trees: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. In volume terms, demand is projected to drop 4.6% per year over that span. The elevated volume of artificial trees purchased during the pandemic is expected to weigh on demand over the forecast period as replacement needs are lower and as demand returns to trend. However, the continuation of elevated pricing levels throughout much of the economy will support demand in value terms. In addition, an expected healthy rebound in existing home sales from a trough in 2023 is projected to support unit demand, as consumers often purchase new holiday decorations, particularly if their items are aged, when moving homes. The ongoing aging of the baby boom generation will shift the product mix toward the smaller, less expensive units preferred by the 65 and older age group. In 2024, sales in volume terms are forecast to decline 14% and in value terms to drop 8.9%, representing some pullback from decade peak levels.
These and other key insights are featured in Christmas Trees: United States. This report forecasts to 2028 US Christmas trees demand in units and nominal US dollars at the retailer level. Total demand is segmented by product in terms of:
