Cordless Power Tools Shift to Lithium-Ion Batteries

by Corinne Gangloff

November 2, 2022

Cleveland OH, November 2, 2022 – According to a new study by The Freedonia Group, cordless electric tools have been the primary focus of technological improvements in power tools in recent years. The shift from nickel-based to lithium-ion batteries has greatly improved product performance. The new study Power Tools addresses this issue and more.

Lithium batteries have several performance advantages over nickel, including:

  • higher energy density
  • lighter weight
  • longer lasting charge
  • more rapid power discharge
  • smaller size

The price of the lithium-ion component of the battery was historically a factor that limited its use in higher end tools; however, these prices have declined significantly and are expected to fall even further.

However, lithium-ion batteries still have disadvantages, specifically their greater volatility compared to other battery chemistries. This volatility can be overcome with battery monitoring systems, which maintain communication between tool, battery, and charger to ensure that overcharging and overheating do not occur and to maintain optimum energy output during use.

This report encompasses electric (plug-in and cordless), pneumatic, hydraulic, powder-actuated, and engine-driven portable power tools, parts, and related parts and attachments. Types of power tools and their parts and attachments include:

  • drills
  • hammers
  • impact wrenches
  • nailers and staplers
  • percussion tools
  • planers and routers
  • saws
  • sanders, polishers, and grinders
  • screwdrivers
  • other power tools such as cutting tools, engravers, glue guns, leveling devices, lubricating equipment, nibblers, nutrunners, riveters, and shears
  • parts and attachments such as batteries, battery chargers, chiseling tools, dies, drill bits, drill chucks, driver bits, dust collection systems, grinding discs, hammer heads, sanding belts, sanding pads, and saw blades
