Durable Goods Shipments to Support Demand for Fabricated Metal Products
Near-term declines expected amid post-pandemic return to trend
Cleveland OH, June 9, 2023 — US nominal demand for fabricated metal products is forecast to see minimal annual declines to 2027, according to Fabricated Metal Products: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Losses will stem from a return to trend following an elevated base year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Further declines will be prevented by 2.1% annual growth in durable goods shipments to 2027. While some fabricated metals are end products, such as metal ladders and cutlery, others are used in the manufacture of durable goods (e.g., motor vehicle metal stampings).
US fabricated metal product shipments are projected to fall at a minimal annual rate to 2027. Domestic metal fabricators will face ongoing tariff challenges impacting the supply of raw materials and importation of component parts, limiting shipment growth. Nevertheless, the tariffs, which also apply to finished fabricated metal products made of steel and aluminum, are expected to continue benefiting domestic producers.
These and other key insights are featured in Fabricated Metal Products: United States. This report forecasts to 2023 and 2027 US fabricated metal products demand and shipments in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level. Total demand is segmented by product in terms of:
architectural and structural metals
machine shops and fasteners
boiler, tank, and shipping containers
forging and stamping
coating, engraving, and heat treating
cutlery and hand tools
hardware
spring and wire products
other products such as ammunition, ball and roller bearings, and enameled iron and metal sanitary ware
To illustrate historical trends, total demand, total shipments, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2012 to 2022.
Products classified as primary metals (such as iron and steel mill, refined nonferrous metal, and metal foundry products) are excluded from the scope of this report. Re-exports of fabricated metal products are excluded from demand and trade figures.
