Metal roofing will become increasingly popular in the residential market

by Corinne Gangloff

February 27, 2023

Cleveland OH, February 27, 2023 – According to a new study by The Freedonia Group, Roofing, demand for metal shake, shingle, and tile roofing is forecast to advance at an average annual pace of 1.8% to 5.83 million squares in 2026, the most rapid of all metal roofing types. Growth will be boosted by increasing use in the residential market; homeowners are specifying these materials as alternatives to more traditional products, such as asphalt shingles or wood shingles and shakes. Not only do metal shingles, shakes, and tiles often closely resemble these products, they have numerous performance advantages compared to thereto, including:
  • resistance to uplifts caused by high winds and impact damage
  • longer product lifespans
  • the ability to meet the vast majority of cool roofing and storm-resistant building codes
  • often being installed in a manner similar to traditional roofing materials, thereby reducing the amount of training needed for new installers
Growth Opportunities Exist in the Transition to More Durable Roofing Products
The transition from standard laminated shingles, which will remain the most popular roofing product, to more durable materials in the residential market will support gains for metal roofing and high-performance laminated shingles:
  • Metal roofing will become increasingly popular in the residential market due to its long lifespan and resistance to uplift and leaks (an important factor in areas subject to severe storms). In addition, the material can reduce a home’s energy consumption through its cool roofing properties.
  • High-performance laminated shingles will see some of the largest absolute gains of any product as they offer a superior performance to standard laminated and three-tab shingles, which allows this product to meet the more stringent weather-resistant building codes that have been adopted in coastal regions of the US.
